How to play 2048

The goal is to make a tile with the number 2048.

1. Every move slides all tiles as far as they go in one direction: up, down, left or right.
2. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one with their sum (2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8…).
3. After every move a new tile (a 2, sometimes a 4) appears in an empty square.
4. Your score goes up by the value of every merged tile.
5. The game ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything.

Tips

• Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build the row next to it in order (2048, 1024, 512…).
• Use only three directions most of the time. If your corner is bottom-left, avoid pressing up unless you have to.
• Keep one row full so the big tiles can’t move out of their line.
• Merge small tiles early to keep empty squares free; a crowded board is how most games end.
• Think one move ahead: before each move, look at where the new tile can appear.
